Pinterest Marketing Tips for Interior Designers

Pinterest is one of the top channels when it comes to home decor inspiration or any sort of creative inspiration for that matter. The platform is abundant in ideas for all style preferences, and if you are an interior designer, getting yourself, and more importantly your work on Pinterest is a great way to boost your reach, improve your credibility, and access a bigger client base.

Visual Search Engine versus Social Media

When it comes to social media we often think of Facebook and Instagram whose audience gets very spoilt for choice because of the sheer volume of users. The thing with Pinterest is that it’s not your typical social media platform. Pinterest is actually a visual search engine.

You’ve probably noticed it for yourself if you’re a Pinterest user. You don’t really go on the app to chat with other people or to share and comment. It’s a lot less about community building. And a lot more on finding the appropriate content for your current need.

But the main difference with a regular search engine such as Google is that Pinterest is highly visual. And this is why for those in the creative industry, just like you, Pinterest tends to win! It’s a great place to target your preferred audience well and get them directly into your sales funnel. When used to its full potential, a visual search engine like Pinterest can help you establish a brand and bring in real clients and increase your revenue.

In this blog, we’ll share our top tips for Pinterest marketing and how you can make the most of it as an interior designer.

Are you looking for Instagram marketing guide? It’s here!

#1 Ensure your account is a business account

This is the first step in getting your Pinterest marketing right. A Pinterest business account gives you access to special creator tools that a standard Pinterest account doesn’t have. And it’s totally free!

With a business account, you have access to profile analytics, you can enable Rich pins, plan your strategy with more efficiency, and promote your business better with ads.

What is a Rich pin?

Rich pins are an SEO-focused aspect of Pinterest. Designed to spread brand awareness, rich pins contribute context to your posts and link to your website. Using code, rich pins pull metadata from the website pages that they link to. As up to 93% of people use Pinterest to plan purchases this is a great way to send people directly to your site so that they can sign up for your services.

#2 Choose a username that makes sense to your business and brand

You want to be easily searchable on Pinterest, and your username makes this possible. While Pinterest is very visual, it is still a search engine at its core. The basics of SEO (search engine optimization) still apply to your Pinterest account and content.

Let’s take an example:

  • Account Name:

We recommend adding a couple of keywords to your account name. Just as in the example above having Home Decor, DIY Renovation, Interior Design, Styling will help be found by people looking for these topics!

If you have a brand name ensure this is part of your username so people can search for you easily.

  • Description:

Your profile needs to clearly show what you do, and your niche. Including a call to action that sends users to your website is a great way to use your description as well. You could promote a freebie for example!

#3 Start Pinning

Much like any marketing effort, consistency is the key. Create a pinning schedule as part of your marketing and content creation strategy and ensure you stick to it. You can do this manually or use a tool to automate your pinning process such as Tailwind. Maintaining consistency in the design language of your pins too helps create recognition for your brand.

We mentioned Rich Pins before. Rich Pins are a feature you automatically get by upgrading to a Pinterest business account. These make pinning content you upload on your website so much easier. Rich Pins automatically sync your website content, including any updates with your pins. Another feature is the ‘Pin-It’ option which allows pinners to easily save your pin or pin it to their own board. It easily lets your website users discover your Pinterest account.

When it comes to the design of your content, images with text overlay perform very well on Pinterest. It could be a blog title or a catchy headline; adding simple text over your image boosts its performance and creates intrigue. Also include long images, this means you’re using up all the available screen space when posting. If you’re using the same content across multiple social media channels such as Instagram and Pinterest ensure you change the size before posting.

#4 Ensure you post original content

This one is probably pretty obvious but it's worth noting. Image theft is a big issue with social media channels. If you come across a pin you appreciate, you can simply just re-pin it. Avoid reuploading someone else’s content without permission. Use your images as often as you can; after all, you’re trying to showcase your interior design projects to attract new clients! Think of your Pinterest page as an extension of your website and portfolio.

With that said you can absolutely reshare other people’s work and inspiration. That will help you to get more engagement with your profile. You could also reshare furniture or decoration pieces for example.

#5 Consider your keywords

It’s not just imagery you need to be aware of but also your keyword placement in other areas of your Pinterest account and your account name. Use basic SEO to write your Pin descriptions, Pinterest image alt text, titles, or any other text. Pick the keywords you want to target and include them as naturally as possible, ensure your keywords are words that your ideal client might search for, for example, office renovation, coffee table placement, boho bedroom ideas, etc.

How to pick the right keywords? Start searching on Pinterest for the topic of your choice and see what other keywords Pinterest is suggesting. This will give you a good idea of what people are looking for.

#6 Make your freebies easily accessible by pinning them

Consider your client journey through your Pinterest profile. You want to guide your audience through the specific path you have mapped out for them so make sure the directions are loud and clear. This is where using text-overlay posts can be really useful as previously mentioned. Make your Call to Action visible and pin any freebies, free guides, blogs, or other offerings on your profile. Have a way that people can flow towards your email list so you can keep in touch with them easily!
