How to start an email funnel to collect leads for your interior design business

You know the process. You sign up for an email newsletter from something you’re genuinely interested in, and then the second it first appears in your inbox you delete it, forget about it, or ignore it. So if you’re an interior designer, how do you get people to sign up for your email list, and, most importantly, how do you keep them interested in it once you do?

The answer is email funnels, a clever system that automates your emails and keeps you engaged with your audience for longer.

Why email marketing matters to your interior design business

Getting your work in front of potential clients’ eyes is never easy. Every day customers are being flooded with information, and every day a new competitor pops up. If you want to really engage with your audience you need to speak to them directly. But that’s not the only reason email marketing can be so crucial for interior designers.

It’s important that you build and maintain a high-quality email list because you are then not dependent upon other platforms, like Instagram, to bring potential clients to you. You own and control your email marketing and you talk directly to the people who want to hear from you. Even though it’s unlikely, social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook could disappear overnight leaving you without access to your audience and potential clients.

What is an email funnel?

As a customer, it would be hard to count the number of email funnels that arrive in your inbox. But we can safely say, it’s probably a lot! Businesses love email funnels because they are a way to swiftly move new subscribers towards a purchase or sale.

An email funnel is a sequence of automated emails, often between four and seven, that is designed to target a specific audience. The aim is to make a sale, or in the instance of an interior designer, book a consultation.

Why do we need email funnels? What are they for?

You can put a “subscribe to my email list” link wherever you like, but unless people really want what you have, or have a serious need for your services, they’re probably not going to invite you into their inbox.

So, how do we change this?

Your email funnel needs to solve a problem. And a specific one at that.

An example could be a step-by-step process to create your own Parisian-style bedroom where you share 5 tips over 5 days. You want to get people's attention and use your email funnel as a place to genuinely help people.

It doesn’t stop there, the more freebies and qualitative content you offer, the faster you build your email list, and the more leads you will collect.

Creating email funnels essentially automates your communication with potential clients, which is how you turn leads into clients.

How to create a successful email funnel

When creating your funnel, it’s important to pay attention to the copy you use, ensuring it is on brand and enticing for your target audience. Some questions you need to answer in your content include:

  1. What can clients GAIN from subscribing

  2. WHY do they need it

  3. What might occur, or how might they FEEL if they don’t subscribe

  4. How LONG until this offer expires

Finding your balance between authentic service and marketing yourself is important.

Some of our top tips for things to include in your funnel include:

  1. Storytelling (people always remember stories. An example could be a ‘before and after’)

  2. Make it authentic (share yourself through video or imagery so that people know who you are)

  3. Don’t be afraid to create a few funnels and to ‘trial and error’ it

  4. Get creative! You’re a designer after all so show people this through your emails. Great copy and professional branding is more likely to get people’s attention

If you need inspiration why not subscribe to a few different email lists, notice what grabs your attention (and what doesn’t).

Email funnels are a great way to collect and connect to new leads.
