Furniture Trends That Are Revolutionizing Design

Design is constantly reinventing itself and revolutionizing. Design is reflective of our current time period and what the people are attracted to. Design is a way to express yourself, and these office interior design elements show how we express ourselves in the ways of commercial design.


Acoustic Furniture:

Acoustic furniture is having a rise in popularity because it can turn a busy room into what feels like your own personal office. Acoustic furniture is anything that helps block out noise and let the users not be distracted by their surroundings. Some examples are wall paddings and chairs with built in acoustic elements to help block out distraction.


Modular Panels:

Modular panels are changing office layouts, simple because with modular panels you can create a room as simply as you can undo it. Modular panels are great for office limited in space because they allow for one big room to be turned into 5 smaller rooms or just an impromptu meeting area. Modular panels help to personalize and create temporary space in any size and shape when needed.


Community Work Tables:

Community work tables are popping up in offices because they are allowing for a more collaborative work space. Community tables also allow the space to feel more open by having one large table where everyone can work and give the rest of the room areas that can be used for other design elements. Community work tables add a clean and refreshing look to any office.

Millennials Are Innovating New Office Design

Millennials are often described as having a disruptive natural and changing industries, but in reality millennials are just looking to bring more balance to offices through the incorporation of diversity and the importance of a work life balance. The impact of millennials can’t be ignored, and with more of them entering the workforce, companies are trying to create an environment that appeals to them, in order to create loyalty, because millennials are notorious for hopping around and changing companies after only a year or two.


Collaborative in Nature:

With millennials having a collaborative nature, companies are looking for new ways to assist in that area and to let them have more collaborative environments.


All Play:

Companies are realizing that what might have worked for past generations, coming in working till lunch and then working till 5pm, isn’t what millennials are looking for. Instead millennials what to come in work, take a break, draw inspiration, go back to work, have lunch, work, and get some more inspiration before they leave. Different millennials draw inspiration from different pass times and because of that companies are creating game rooms, they game rooms encompass everything from libraries, to scrabble walls, to ping pong table anything that millennials can use to take a quick break from their work, so they don’t get a brain block and then come back ready to tackle the project. Having office meeting room designs where millennials can take a quick break is beneficial because it boasts their emotional state and lets them leave, so they don’t distract others that are in a work zone.


Adult Snacks:

Companywide happy hours isn’t a new thing; however, having in office bars is. By having in office bars it lets companies have companywide happy hours to bring in the weekend for employees working on Fridays or to celebrate a new client or a project approval. In office bars isn’t just a pull for millennials, but it is something millennials are spearheading because for them a good balance between work and play is important. An in office bar is a good way to balance out work and play, but as always, it is important to drink responsibly.


Don’t Forget Mother Nature:

Millennials are known to have a strong love for design elements that bring in indoor plants into the mix. They believe in the health benefits that indoor plants provide. However, companies are taking it a step forward and having company gardens that employees can tend to and grow plants from their own liking such as sunflowers or tomato plants. Tending to a garden is something that can give employees a stronger sense of purpose and a good inspiration break to water their plants. Company gardens are also seen as a collaborative and community effort that brings employees together.

Not all millennials are programed the same, so it is important to pick elements that appeal to the millennials that work in your office and fit with your office culture because the reason they are in your office is in part due to the office culture. And while this list is for what millennials are attracted to these are also elements that other employees from different generations can enjoy as well.

Function & Form: How Functionality Plays a Role in the Design Process


When it comes to business we all try to be as efficient as possible and make sure that things are functional and working when we need them to. So, how is it that often with design and can get so swept away and carried away just because we like how something looks. So often when looking through magazines or walking through a store we fall in love with a piece and then spend the rest of the time coming up with a reason to buy it or trying to find a place for it in our home. However, moments like that can lead to buyer’s remorse when we end up not having anywhere to put it or it doesn’t quite exactly fit how we were expecting it to. This is why architect Louis Sullivan coined the term “form follows function.” Sullivan understood the importance of having a room or a house that serves a purpose, and while it is something we forget, we know still holds true.


By Putting functionality first, it lets us create a plan and think through how the room or office will be laid out. By having a plan, we are able to make the most of the space and make sure whatever elements are needed in the room: desks, chairs, computers, white boards, etc. all fit in the conference room design. No one wants an office where when they walk into it they feel overwhelmed or crowded in. Moments like that will deter any work that could be done if we are constantly fidgeting trying to get everything to fit.


By focusing on functionality it lets us be more cost efficient when we are designing a conference room. Through the lens of functionality, we are able to invest in pieces that we know will be needed for longevity and use them as the center pieces for the room and then around that build out the room. With investing in functional pieces it lets us get creative and spend less on pieces that we know are more trend focused. That way when we spend less on trend focused pieces we won’t feel bad when replace them when a new design trend comes along, or when someone else takes over the office and wants to redesign it to fit their style.

In the end of the day function and form should work together. Function and form are opposite sides of the same coin, and while we may want to prioritize form and design first. By focusing on functionality first, we are able to create a meeting room design that is laid out in a way that lets us get the most from design pieces that we add.
