Creating a website is becoming more and more complex. A well-designed user interface and experience can make or break your company’s success. We may not realize the effect it has, but having a strong and reputable digital presence has become pretty much an essential to every business. It takes working with the right individual(s) who have studied web design and continue to break ground and develop with the latest trends. At A Design Partnership, we’re lucky to have our own modern web design master, Dani Weidner. Here are a few of her helpful tips regarding modern web design.
Stay well-read and current on the latest trends in web design
Whether we’re talking fashion or web design, trends go faster than they arrive. It’s important to stay well read on everything going on in your industry. Find your favorite blogs to read and check them weekly. Falling behind on updates and trends will only make your job more complicated. We work in an constant evolving industry, so your designs should evolve along with it.
Use styleguides to keep your look consistent throughout your site
The best way to create a consistent look for your website is by developing a styleguide. If you have different members of your team working on different pages of the website, everyone knows exactly what to do and how to make it look. It’s also helpful to ensure any work that may be needed in the future from a third-party production has the same guidelines to follow so you can make sure it blends with your current aesthetic.
Start with a pencil and paper. Planning off screen first can save time
Remember in grade school when your teachers would always make you write at least 3 rough drafts before you published your final paper. The process of designing a modern website is exactly the same. You must plan out each step of your design. Throughout your planning and brainstorming process you will want to change things around. Having a pencil that can easily be erased will only make the development stages that much easier.
Don’t be afraid of space. Too much clutter can make a site look complicated and dated
The purpose of any website is to turn visitors into customers. If your website is out dated or too cluttered with space, your visitors will be turned away. Easy navigation is one of the most important elements of modern web design. Anyone visiting your site is there to find out about your services and what you have to offer, so don’t make it difficult for them to find an answer.
Bottom line, if you’re not optimized for mobile you’re losing sales. Research shows that 65% of mobile users will abandon your website if it takes longer than 30 seconds to load. Even most templates that you can purchase online from websites like Squarespace and Wix come mobile friendly. If your online website and mobile website don’t work equally, you’re only hurting your business.
